Katarina began skating on ice when she was five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent as she enrolled to a special school that caters to children who have a passion for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Her coach Jutta was also there. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982, when she placed 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's elegance and grace have caught the interest of all. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the female silver medal for figure skating in an intense contest. In a more competitive competition, four years later, Witt won the gold medal. The free skater was unable to win however, she took home the gold medal for her figure that was compulsory as well as her program was short. Witt is the first figure skater female to win the same event twice since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career as an actress. Witt was seventh in the competition, and she delighted the crowd despite not winning a medal. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in the year 1995.
